The Hero’s Journey Rewritten: Peter Gunn and the Rise of The Amazons

What if your near-death experience at age seven wasn’t the end—but the beginning of a lifelong mission?

In this electrifying episode of One More Thing Before You Go, host Michael sits down with Peter Gunn—U.S. Air Force veteran, bodybuilder, coffee connoisseur, and poet—whose life reads like an epic. But Peter isn’t just living a hero’s journey. He’s rewriting it.

From surviving childhood obesity and a profound near-death experience, to serving 20 years in the military, Peter’s story is one of resilience, reinvention, and revelation. When he became a father, he saw a glaring omission in the classic epics: the absence of the feminine. So he created The Amazons—a lyrical saga that places women at the center of myth, not the margins.

In this conversation, we explore:

  • The power of storytelling to reshape identity and legacy
  • How Peter’s near-death experience sparked a lifelong creative fire
  • Why the Amazonion's challenge the traditional hero’s arc
  • What it means to honor both masculine and feminine forces in myth
  • How poetry can be a weapon of peace, truth, and transformation

This episode is a cinematic journey into myth, meaning, and the stories that shape us. Don’t miss it.

Peter Gunn

U.S. Air Force vet, avid bodybuilder, coffee connoisseur and poet who strives to bring epic poetry and literature craftsmanship back from the past.

-At 7 years old I had succumbed to heat stroke and experienced a brief NDE where an angel told me I had to go back because my job wasn't done.

-At 12 years old I had to deal with morbid childhood obesity and I also served as an altar boy and soon saw the failings within the Roman Catholic church.

-Honorably served 20 years in the US Air Force

-When I had my daughter in 2010 I wanted to enroll her into my love of classic poetry but soon saw that the feminine was left out of the hero's journey and decided to start writing The Amazons to alleviate that discrepancy.

-In 2020 when Covid hit it woke me up just as to how so many people are asleep in the world so that is when I decided to start the Sigma Squad Graphic novel based off of ancient Gnostic Gospels to let people know what is going on behind the scenes that aren't the type to pick up a large book without pictures.
